Cape Verde, ten islands in the middle of the Atlantic

Where does our chef come from? A short trip to Cape Verde, between music, cachupa and ouri.

Off the coast of Senegal, Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands set in the Atlantic. People speak Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole, and it is the homeland of our chef, Humberto.

A mixed culture

A crossroads between Africa, Europe and Brazil, Cape Verde has built a unique culture. Its music is the best example: morna, gentle and melancholic, was made famous worldwide by Cesária Évora.

At the table

The national dish is cachupa, a stew of corn, beans and vegetables, sometimes with meat or fish, simmered gently for hours. Fish, octopus and seafood play a big part too, as does grogue, the archipelago’s sugar cane spirit.

And to play

In the streets, people play ouri, a seed game from the awale family. You can try it on our website while you wait for your meal!
